Phsychologists know that a certain amount of stress in our lives can be beneficial to the way we achieve. If you have an essay or a report to write in a months time then everything else, even watching day- time TV, becomes more attractive to you than that, as every student knows! However if you are placed under the stress of having the report or essay done by tomorrow morning then suddenly, you have to focus or lose out.
Stresses also come from our own self- imposed goals, and from the relationships we have with people around us. Too much stress is harmful and can produce serious physical problems in the long term. These also go back to that old fight or flight reaction (see Fears and Phobias) as our bodies are constantly performing at those levels when under too much stress. This can also lead to Sleep Problems, more severe anxiety states and Panic Attacks, which are generally treated as part of Anxiety/Stress issues."
